If you are pregnant and thinking that adoption might be an option worth considering for your new baby, you likely are looking for a LOCAL adoption agency that can help you through the process, help you understand your rights as a mom, explain other options to you and just be there to support you through a difficult time- whether you choose to move forward with adoption or not. When looking for an adoption agency on the internet, you might find agencies that are located in other cities, perhaps even a different state than where you are currently living. “How does that work?” you might find yourself wondering. This is an important question, one that you should fully understand the answer to before choosing to work with an agency 1000 miles away, 2000 miles away or even further.
How the Big Agencies Work from Afar
Should you decide to begin your research by calling a NON-LOCAL adoption agency, you should know what to expect. An agency located in another state will likely support you remotely during your pregnancy and afterward, but it is usually not possible for them to assist you face-to-face as their offices are so far away. You will likely receive support and counseling by email, phone and text. While this level of support may work for some, many of the clients that Open Arms Adoption Network has worked with have truly appreciated the opportunity to meet their Adoption Counselor in person, and receive the support and hand-holding that one can only get with a LOCAL adoption agency. A LOCAL agency can schedule a time for a counselor to meet with you right away, whereas you might be playing phone-tag for a little while with an agency that is not local to you. Another advantage of working with a local adoption agency is they can assist you with setting up resources to assist you during your pregnancy, and of course, there is help with getting resources set-up, if you decide to raise your new baby. Your counselor can drive you to prenatal appointments if you wish, meet with family members to help you discuss your adoption plan, and provide any support that you need. If your counselor is located in another state, it would be difficult for them to provide you many of the services that a local agency is able to provide.
Big Cities and the Small Ones Too
While many adoption agencies are based in larger cities, they often have staff located throughout the state and are able to work with pregnant women or new mothers well beyond the area of their main office. For instance, while Open Arms Adoption Network has offices in Center City Philadelphia, North Philadelphia, Bala Cynwyd and Elkins Park, South Jersey, North Jersey, Wilmington DE, and Manhattan, counselors are easily able to meet with pregnant women and new moms in other areas such as Northeast Philly, Norristown, Lehigh Valley, Lancaster County, and further out as well. Offices in New Jersey include Cherry Hill and Florham Park, but we regularly meet with pregnant women and new moms in Vineland, Camden, Bridgeton, Newark, Trenton and many other cities. No matter where you are located within your state, if you reside in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware or New York, Open Arms Adoption Network would be able to assist you. Counselors from Open Arms will come to you, and meet you wherever you would like to speak with them. You are never expected to travel to one of our many offices in order to receive adoption counseling. We are happy to meet you wherever you are most comfortable.
Local Adoption Agencies Provide Local Adoptive Families
If you choose to work with a local agency, that means that the waiting adoptive families are local as well. This has its advantages, especially should you choose to have an Open Adoption. If you choose to have an Open Adoption, you could meet the adoptive family that you choose to raise your baby, and even have visits with them 2-3 times a year. Usually, when a Birth Mom chooses to have an Open Adoption and chooses the adoptive family for her baby, the Adoption Counselor schedules a get-together for everyone, in a calm, relaxing environment where the Birth Mom is able to get to know the Adoptive Family that she chooses for her baby. This opportunity is not always available when working with an adoption agency that is not local, or when the adoptive family chosen is not local. Waiting adoptive families with Open Arms Adoption should be within driving distance of you, and therefore able to meet you, should you get to the point in your adoption plan of wanting to meet an adoptive family.
Your Baby, Your Adoption, Your Preferences
If you decide to work with an adoption agency such as Open Arms, you can decide the level of contact that you would like with your counselor. If you would like to text for a while in the beginning, as you learn more about adoption, that is completely fine. If you want to meet with a counselor the day after you call, that is fine too. Working with a local adoption agency has its advantages and your counselor will be much more accessible to you, since she likely lives and works about 30 minutes away. Should you want to get together with your adoption counselor on a weekly basis, that is up to you. Many women choose to wait until giving birth to choose to meet their counselor, that is completely fine as well. This is your adoption plan, and Open Arms will work with you to meet your needs and provide whatever we can to support you during this time.
